Richard Joseph Townsend, 72, of rural Veedersburg passed away Monday Jan. 11, 2021, at his residence.
Richard was born Jan. 13, 1948, at Danville, Illinois, the son of the late Robert and Mary (Salts) Townsend. He married Linda Sue McKinney on Aug. 21, 1969, at Covington. She preceded him in death March 8, 1996.
Surviving family include: son Scott D. (Denise) Townsend, Veedersburg; daughter Sabrina (Jimmy) Thomas, Georgetown, Illinois; sister Lois (Paul) Boswell; six grandchildren, Dakota Townsend, Breann Townsend, Tabitha Lomax, Cayla Fuller, Donna McNeely and Vanessa Bauer; and several great-grandchildren.
Richard graduated from Covington High School in 1965. After high school he enlisted in the Navy for four years and served during the Vietnam War. After his time in the Navy he enlisted in the Air Force; an enlistment that would continue for 20 years of service up until his retirement.
After his retirement from the military, Richard worked at a few different jobs around the area; he also enjoyed spending his time working with wood, fishing and air boating in Florida. He enjoyed working with horses for a time, and he especially enjoyed his most recent dog Taz. More than anything he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 at Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg.
