Seasons end for Athenians, Mustangs

LEBANON — Crawfordsville’s softball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday in the Lebanon 3A Sectional. The Athenians lost to the Tigers 20-4 in five innings.

Crawfordsville got off to a great start by scoring four first-inning runs. All four runs came with two outs. Sophomore Laikyn Dowell hit a bases clearing triple to put her team ahead 4-0 which lasted until the bottom of the second frame.

The Tigers took control of the game by scoring 11 runs in the second inning and seven more runs in the third inning. The Tigers recorded six hits in the second frame and were aided with five walks and two errors.

Lebanon benefited from three batters being hit, three walks and two hits in the seven run third inning.

Crawfordsville only had two hits in the game. Dowell’s triple and a single by Tori Truax.

Starting Athenian senior pitcher Molly Pierce pitched two innings and gave up seven runs. Freshman Kareena Shuler entered the game in the third inning but could not record an out with three straight walks. Freshman Josslynn Simmons pitched the final two innings and gave up nine runs on three hits.

The Athenian seniors, Pierce and Christina Susdorf, conclude their softball careers with the loss.

The young Crawfordsville team finishes the season with a 4-22 record.

Danville defeated Guerin Catholic 5-1 in Tuesday’s other semi-final game. Lebanon (7-16) and Danville (19-7) played in the championship game Wednesday.

Mustangs bow out of tourney

MONTEZUMA — Fountain Central struggled offensively Tuesday at the Riverton Parke 1A Sectional. The Panthers defeated the Mustangs 12-0 in five innings.

Fountain Central only recorded two hits in the game, both by Patience Bixler.

The Mustangs were within striking distance finding themselves down 5-0 after four innings. However, Riverton Parke scored seven runs in the fifth inning.

The Panthers had 14 hits in the game and committed just one error. Six different Riverton Parke players had two hits apiece. Number nine hitter Kalley Jukes was 2-for-2 with three-RBI and scored three runs to lead her team.

Fountain Central seniors this season were Lillie Bennett, Jacquelyn Weber, Kara Kiger and Oliviah Jones.

The Mustangs finish the season with a 9-14 record including 5-9 in the Wabash River Conference.

North Vermillion (3-17) defeated Lafayette Central Catholic 13-1 in Tuesday’s other game and will play in the semi-finals game against Riverton Parke (19-8) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Faith Christian (4-15)  will face Covington (17-10) in the 5:30 p.m. today semi-final game.
