SOCCER: Chargers split with Western Boone

LINDEN — The North Montgomery boy’s and girl’s soccer teams split a pair of games with Sagamore Conference foe Western Boone on Saturday.

In the girl’s game, trailing 2-1, Sidney Campbell broke free and tied the game at 2-2 with her second goal of the game, with under 14 minutes to play in regulation.

The Chargers and Stars remained scoreless through regulation and headed to overtime, where Hillary Reed found the back of the net in the final 90 seconds of the second overtime period to notch the 3-2 win for Western Boone.

“The intensity in general was up,” Chargers coach Julie Hodges said. “That’s what we struggled with the other night against Greencastle was winning that first ball and then keeping the pressure.”

After a 20-goal season during her sophomore campaign, Campbell has found the back of the net six times in five games this season, but Teegan Bacon (four goals), and Lydia Dugard (three goals) have given North Montgomery a more balanced offense through the early part of the 2019 season.

“We know Sidney can score,” Hodges said. “Just the idea that she has those other weapons is going to be big for us as the year goes on. That’s the thing right now is we have a lot of a talent up there, we just have to figure out how make it all gel together.”

In the boy’s game, North Montgomery jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Cooper Bowman and Baydin Hall, and held on for a 2-1 win over Western Boone.

“With the inexperienced team we have, they’re growing and getting better,” Chargers first-year coach Tristain Hall said. “Just mentally knowing what to do is a big difference, but from going to Frankfort and putting four goals on them. I think it helped them get past this hump of not winning games and not finishing games.”

Hall has been especially pleased with the development of the Charger’s offense.

“I think it’s unfolding great,” he said. “We’ve got Baydin Hall who is generally playing center-mid and kind of directing traffic, and then we’ve got Colby Coon who is a speedster, and then this new kid Evan () who is skilled on the ball as well, and even Cooper Bowman is going in there and getting headers and scoring goals.”

Both teams will be in action tonight against county and Sagamore Conference rival Southmont at 5:30 p.m. The girls will play at Southmont, while the boys will be at North Montgomery.
