South FFA team advances to national contest

NEW MARKET — The Southmont FFA Skilllathon team, coached by adviser Erin Gilley, qualified to go to the national contest. The contest will be held in North Carolina on Sunday. 

Team members are senior Brady Largent, sophomore Jenna Bushong and freshmen Clair Simpson and Naomi Plunkett.

For the contest, members identify meat cuts from different species and identify breeds of different species. They also have knowledge of other animal byproducts such as wool, feed ratios and supplements.

At the area contest on Sept. 15, Bushong placed third, Simpson fifth, Largent 12th and Plunkett 23rd. The team placed first in the area.

At the state contest on Oct. 2, Simpson placed second, Largent sixth and the team placed third. 

Rachel Rhodes also competed in the senior level. She placed 25th at area.

The junior team consisted of Sophia Shannon, Claire Kessler and Avery Stadler. Their team placed first at area and eighth at state. 

Shannon placed first at area and third at state. Kessler placed second at area. Stadler placed fifth at area.
