ZIONSVILLE — Southmont’s Faith Allen has extended her season one more week. The sophomore placed third at the IHSAA Track and Field Sectional at Zionsville High School on Tuesday night with a time of 11:42.94.

For most of the race Allen was sitting comfortably in second place however in the final seconds was passed by Avon’s Hannah Taylor.

Southmont also had a strong showing by DeLorean Mason who placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.18 and eight in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.38. The Mountie 4x800 team also placed eighth overall.

Allen will now advance to next week’s Regional at Lafayette Jeff High School.

“I was just able to advance and that’s what matters most,” Allen said. “It’s really nice to know that I have another race in which I can try to improve off tonight. I did want to try and hit a personal record and place higher so having another week is nice because I can make up for those shortcomings.”

With the competition stepping up at the regional, Allen after having her freshman season canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be competing at the regional for the first time and look to showcase her skills at the state meet if she were to advance.

“I just have to keep having a positive mentality this week at practice,” she said. “That will help me push myself as I look to have an even better time next week.”

Mountie Coach Desson Hannum was pleased with Allen’s performance and knows that she’ll be ready to go for the regional.

“That was our goal to get her out,” he said. “We originally had her in the 1600 and the 3200 but just thought the 3200 was the best chance for her to get out. She knows what her focus is this week now and that clears some things up and should help her as she prepares.”

“DeLorean was able to get us some points in some of her events tonight as well and that was great to see from both her and Faith. All the girls came out and competed hard and that’s what you want to see at a meet like this.”

Southmont as a team placed 9th overall with 12 points.
