Live entertainment will return to the stage this week with the Sugar Creek Players’ rendition of Mamma Mia!
The show will be performed at 7 p.m. today and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the auditorium at North Montgomery High School. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets are available only by ordering online.
SCP decided to perform the show at the local high school instead of the Vanity Theater to help maintain social distance among the audience members. The high school auditorium has more seats than the downtown theater.
“I think it is great to be back on the stage and have the live theater again and be able to use a big space like NMHS,” said Katie Melvin, co-producer.
SCP originally planned to perform Mamma Mia! last year. However, it was canceled due to the pandemic. In the absence of live shows, SCP filmed and broadcast two shows, Arsenic & Old Lace in 2020 and Almost, Maine in 2021.
“We tried to keep entertainment available to people in Montgomery County,” said Jennifer Snook, co-producer.
The cast has had some difficulties preparing for this show due to a shorter practice schedule.
“It has been more cramped in terms of rolling out the show,” said Eli Reeves, a Crawfordsville High School graduate. “Usually, we have about three and a half months to do a show.”
The show opened Thursday and continues its four-day run through Sunday.
“Even though we were influenced by the pandemic, our crew was really good about learning everything that they needed to get,” said Dan Martin, co-director.
Fellow co-director Megan Birk, said, “I just think it is the perfect show to bring us back to live productions for us. The songs are super catchy and super fun. It has got a lot of dancing and comedy.”
Cast and crew are looking forward to the production.
“I think it is like a family here and I think that seeing the show for the first time will definitely get people excited about the theater opening up again in Montgomery County,” said Cassidy Bowlin, a Southmont High School graduate.
