LINDEN — Fountain Central won in dominating fashion in boys’ tennis on Monday night at North Montgomery.
The Mustangs swept the Chargers 5-0, surrendering just two games.
“We have six matches in six days,” Fountain Central coach Chris Webb said. “We talked about the importance of coming out and being ready.”
Carson Eberly defeated Alex Chapman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Cody Linville blanked Hunter Kashon 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot. Brent Myers beat Haze Kashon 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 doubles the duo of CJ Yager and Jacob Keeling beat Brookes Walters and Will McKinnis 6-0, 6-0 and Brayden Prickett and Sawyer Keeling beat Nate McCoy and Jaxin Wethington 6-0, 6-1.
“There’s always positives and there’s always things we can take away,” first-year coach Rick Holtz said. “The one thing I saw tonight was we were standing still and watching their shots. I told the guys after, it’s one thing to lose, and another thing to lose and like it. We shouldn’t like losing like this.”
Fountain Central (4-0) remained perfect on the season with the win, and Webb knows the win will be a learning moment for the Mustangs.
“I think especially in doubles you can be a little more aggressive at the net, and what I think it allows is it allows your players to see the reward for being a little bit more aggresive at the net,” he said.
Fountain Central will continue its busy week tonight against Covington, and take time to honor Evan and Levi McTagertt by raising money and wearing orange and light blue shirts.
The annual McTagertt Tournament was canceled this summer, but Fountain Central wanted to continue the tradition.
“When we weren’t able to get that in this summer, Dave (Kight) and I talked,” Webb said. “and a lot of the Covington players enjoy coming over and participating in the tournament, it made since to do something for this match.”
Evan and Levi McTagertt, sons of Jeff and Brenda, both passed away in separate single-car accidents , in 2004 and 2007. A scholarship was founded in Evan’s name and a Trust Fund for Levi’s son.
