It was a weekend with NFL, but without much NFL travel. Nothing but a trip to Indy.
The last weekend without lots of miles for a long time.
I did get some miles on the old jalopy though.
There was a trip to Western Boone to watch what I think is going to be a pretty good Crawfordsville boys soccer team win, saw the Southmont volleyball team fall behind 2-0 in their home opener and came back to take three games in a row for a really exciting win, and saw some good things from the Athenians football team last Friday, even in a loss. They put some yards on the stat sheet and some points on the board.
There was also that NFL thing, with a Colts preseason game on Saturday.
I’ll keep my opinions mostly to myself here. There are lots of games to play and lots of things can happen in the crazy world of the NFL. With a lot friends who are Colts fans, I’ll side with them and hope for the best this season.
My best travel stories this week are coming from my sister and her husband, who are in Iceland for a week!
Now, I have been to Green Bay and Chicago in December and/or January for games, and a couple more in Minneapolis, so I can very confidently say I have been to “ICE-land,” but never been to the island itself.
They are having a fun time, the pictures are great, and they are giving lots of good food reports. I saw one of their menus and it had “shrimp on a stick!”
I thought I had ventured back to the state fair, but there were no elephant ears or deep-fried Twinkies. There is cod in every shape, size and form.
Speaking of seafood, I’m heading to the Gulf Coast this weekend for the last of the preseason games. From the hot and humid of Crawfordsville to the even hotter and more humid New Orleans. Oh, for the sights, sounds and smells of the French Quarter on a hot August day…
As I prepare for all the football work in front of me, I have to give a heads-up on a basketball item
Jared McMurray has taken over the leadership of the Basketball Heritage Project, the local non-profit that has been in existence for quite some time, and has worked to preserve the history of hoops here in Montgomery County. They also give out some scholarships each spring.
Jared has sweet-talked Barry Lewis and I into giving him a hand in re-energizing this group, and as you readers about the three of us, there is not a person we are scared of nor a person we won’t ask for help.
This is a big job, and lots of hands are going to be needed. We think the payoff is also big. There are stories that have been told but need to be re-told, and saved for the future. I know that last spring when I was digging into the county tournament and the nostalgia game at CHS, there are lots of tales left. It has also been 50 years since consolidation, and there are lots of newer stories and heroes to highlight.
More on that as the weeks and months progress.
In the meantime, I’ll get a read on the beignet crop this year in the Big Easy, and let you know how nice their new huge airport is.
Safe travels.
