Thomas “Tom” Ray Witty, 72, Bainbridge, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, at his home surrounded by family.
He was born March 1, 1948, at Brazil, Indiana, to Otis and Mildred (Brush) Witty. He married Nancy (Gritton) Witty on Feb. 3, 1968. Together they raised four children, Michael Witty, Scott Witty and Amanda (Mike) Mahoy, all of Bainbridge, and Joey Witty of Indianapolis. He has six grandchildren, Steven Witty, Kayla Mahoy, Sierra Witty, Cole Mahoy, Ashley Witty and Bryson Witty; and two great-grandsons, Hunter and Jameson Mahoy.
Tom worked for the Indiana State Highway Department, before he went to work at Mid-States Wire until it closed in 1997. He went to Heidtman Steel before retiring in 2011 after he was diagnosed with cancer.
He truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; enjoying home-cooked meals, sitting on his front porch with his loving wife and family, mowing the lawn and working on projects in his garage. He always had a knack for making everyone who came into his home feel welcome. He was a devoted husband, father and Papa “old fart” as his grandchildren often called him.
Tom is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy; siblings, Donna (Jim) Lasley of Crawfordsville), Ron (Julie) Witty of Avon, Sandy (Carlos) Shrewsbury of Greencastle; and sister-in-law Deborah (Ken) Alexander of Camas, Washington. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law Warren and Mary Eaton; father-in-law George Gritton; and sister-in-law Gail Gritton.
Visitation will be 3-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13 at Hopkins Rector Funeral Home in Greencastle. Private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Bainbridge Cemetery. CDC guidelines will be followed during the visitation.
Memorial contributions can be made to Heart to Heart Hospice or Riley Hospital for Children.
