The Flower Lovers Garden Club has chosen the Garden of the Month for July.
“We think you will be delighted and surprised at Jake and Alex Thompson’s corner lot at 909 Sloan where they reside,” said club members in a press release. “Their space has been transformed over the past 13 years; from ivy, ivy growing everywhere to what you will see today.”
Alex has evolved just like the garden by trying new methods that she has learned about from reading and trial and error. Last year she put in a native plant garden determined to keep the local pollinators coming back as well as new visitors. Other projects in the making will be the raised vegetable garden beds to be built where a giant spruce fell this year. She is a recycler at heart and uses found natural items to enhance her creativity throughout the space.
There are cone flowers nodding in the breeze, white and purple Iberis flowers line the drive and an assortment of stately Joe Pyeweed, Queen of the Prairie and Meadow Rue are in the mix. Lamb’s ear thrives to the east along with Black Eyed Susan. The yard is flanked by a favorite tulip tree that gives morning shade to the front yard. Gogi berries and horseradish return every year beside the ongoing experimental garden bed which is this year sprouting tobacco and the possibility of pumpkins.
The stick arbor standing guard at the front yard is another successful project just like the newly built fence made from rescued branches of the felled spruce tree.
All this … and we haven’t even told you about the pond that bubbles beyond the fence.
Alex’s husband Jake and their two boys are always on hand to dig, plant, build and assist with the never ending list of gardening adventures in this sweet cottage garden.
