The Flower Lovers Garden Club is happy to announce the final entry for this season’s Garden of the Month.
The August Garden of the Month belongs to Terri McKeighen at 316 S. Water St; and is bursting with color and variety.
With her eclectic cottage style of gardening, McKeighen has made sense of her available planting spaces with balance and thoughtfulness given to her choices.
Although she mentioned that she doesn’t usually have a plan, but plants what she likes and if it doesn’t work out, she moves the plant to a new location for another try … this is what gardeners do.
There’s an interesting border along the front edge of the yard made from local Poston bricks which gives all the Impatients planted there a place to hang out and minimizes mowing the front hill.
A Japanese maple tree shades multiple Hosta plants and hugs the north edge of the yard. At the south edge of the property a beautifully shaped oak leaf hydrangea grows with authority and a recently planted butterfly bush boasts attractive purple blooms in front of a full bucket of hen and chicks.
Several vignettes designed with yard art, ceramic planters and ironwork show off annual plantings as well as perennials. Look for the giant white “dinner plate Hibiscus” and the Lenten rose, painted ferns and snapdragons and the cute ceramic rabbit eating his way through a pot of white moss rose.
The beautifully planted yard takes your eyes up a stairway lined with potted planters of cannas’ and other annuals; and ends on a sweet porch that is dripping with hanging baskets in bloom.
This garden is truly a feast for your eyes.
