VOLLEYBALL: Patriots sweep Mustangs

VEEDERSBURG — After a fast start, the Fountain Central volleyball team cooled off in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-12) loss to Wabash River Conference foe Seeger on Tuesday night.

The Mustangs jumped out a quick 4-0 lead, but watched the Patriots (5-3, 2-1) score 15 of the next 20 points to go up 15-9 and never look back in the first set.

“We’ve really been working on being consistent and aggressive,” Fountain Central coach Alyssa Larson said. “I think that’s something that’s lacked early in the season and last year. And I think we came out with that, and had moments throughout the whole game, but we lost it at times, and I think that’s just inexperience.”

In the second set, Fountain Central (0-3, 0-2) held in there early with the score locked at 3-3, before Seeger took control 7-3 with a 4-0 run. The Mustangs showed a fight late by trimming an 11-point deficit down to six, but it was too late for a complete comeback.

Seeger dominated the third set from the start to close out the match.

Larson can see her team improving, and knows they must rely on their seniors to help them keep focused and rally once the other team goes on a scoring run.

“A lot of that is counting on are older players to come through and make a big play for us,” she said. “A lot of times when we get stuck in that position we try and get a set to one our seniors, because a lot of times that gets us rolling again.”

Seniors Alexis Griffin and Reagan Oswalt each had five kills in the loss. Marley Massey added 18 digs, and Lillie Fishero had eight assists.

Seeger hosts Crawfordsville on Thursday, while Fountain Central travels to South Newton.
