For 50 years, Wabash College students chose one evening each fall to walk the neighborhoods around campus and knock on doors to accept donations for the United Way in Montgomery County (formerly MUFFY) annual drive. Professors, families and others in the community switched on their porchlights in anticipation of a brief visit from these men. Unfortunately, like many things, COVID forced an end to that tradition last year.
That’s when the Wabash College fighting spirit kicked in.
A group of student leaders put their heads together and, working with the United Way in Montgomery County office, decided a new path. The presidents of the fraternity set a goal for each house to raise $500. With 10 houses and one group consisting of the independent residence halls, the Wabash Student Campaign aims to raise $5,500 — more than triple the amount from the past several years — to support our community.
Each house is approaching the challenge differently. Many are using football tailgates to entice alumni into the efforts. Others are donating proceeds from current fundraising events to the campaign. Some are creating new options. All are working hard to meet the goal and make a difference.

“Wabash College is excited to continue our tradition of helping United Way in Montgomery County raise money for local nonprofit agencies that serve our community,” Olofson said. “These agencies are an important part of the fabric of Montgomery County, and we are privileged to be able to give back to a community that gives so much to the College and our students.”
While there is no longer a need to turn on your porchlight, you can still support the Wabash men in their efforts.
