XC PREVIEW: Mounties return top runners

Posted

The Southmont cross country team returns their top runners on both sides for the upcoming season.

Juniors Faith Allen and Aaron Evans and sophomore Mason Cass are all three back and ready to help the Mounties compete as a team this season after individual success in 2020.

“I’m really excited this year because we have enough kids on both rosters

to have full teams,” Southmont coach Shelley Allen said. “I’m hoping to continue to improve the times of all kids from the fastest ones to the slowest one. The hope is that it will lead to some team wins.”

Allen won multiple meets and invitationals last season and hopes to build on her semi-state qualification last season. She was the Montgomery County champion and second at both the Sagamore Conference and IHSAA Sectional.

On the boys’ side Skyler Wood is returning as a two-sport athlete splitting time with soccer, as Brett Keller returns as well. The boys will welcome Hunter Alesi and Clay Allen to the team, while junior Heaven Smith joins the girls’ team and several freshmen and sophomores will fill out the Mounties’ lineup.

“With our upcoming freshmen and some other new members we were able to fill

in some gaps that we previously had,” Allen said. “Both teams are very driven this year to

do well so I’m looking forward to seeing how many of their goals they can accomplish.”
