Nucor Steel Indiana is investigating a workplace fatality involving a contractor that occurred Friday morning.

The death involved an Edw. C. Levy Co. contract employee working at the Crawfordsville plant.

“On behalf of the 800 teammates in our Nucor Steel Indiana family, I want to express my sympathies to the family and friends of this contract team member and others impacted by this tragedy,” said Eric Radtke, general manager of Nucor Steel Crawfordsville. “We are deeply saddened by this event.”

The mill suspended operations immediately following the incident and will continue working with Edw. C. Levy Co. and Occupational Safety & Health Administration officials to investigate the cause of the incident, Radtke said.

No other information was immediately provided by Nucor regarding the cause of or events leading up to the contractor’s death, nor the victim’s identity.

Local emergency records indicate medical personnel were dispatched to the plant at 8:49 a.m. Friday in reference to a fall. Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery County Coroner also responded to the call.
