Charger band earns gold rating at festival

Posted

The North Montgomery High School Band, under the direction of Andy Simpkins, participated in the Indiana State School Association Concert Band Festival at Lafayette Jefferson High School on April 15.

The event brings high school bands from across the area together for a chance to have their performances evaluated by respected music adjudicators. The Charger band prepared three selections for the festival which were, “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” by John Philip Sousa, “Ammerland” by Jacob DeHaan and “Music for a Celebration” by Anne McGinty. High scores were received by the band from each judge, and they earned a gold rating.

Additionally, bands participated in sight-reading, an exercise where the band receives music they have never seen, reviews it for 10 minutes (without paying), and then performs it for evaluation. The North band also received a gold on this portion of the festival.

“I am proud of the students’ for their focus and determination during our rehearsals leading up to the festival,” Simpkins said. “I could not be more thrilled with the results.”

The band performs its last concert of the school year at 7 p.m. May 9 in the NMHS auditorium.
