LINDEN — North Montgomery completed the regular season sweep of county rival Southmont on Wednesday. The Chargers again got effective pitching and had timely hits to win 9-1.
Charger starting sophomore pitcher Lincoln Heide surrendered one hit in three innings. The righty struck out two Mounties and walked seven in his first start of the season.
Senior hurler Crew Cole pitched four innings and gave up two hits and struck out four.
Southmont starting senior pitcher Phisher Benge pitched 3.1 innings, giving up eight runs on seven Charger hits.
North Montgomery led 1-0 after two innings before erupting for seven runs on six hits in the third frame to take an 8-0 lead.
Heide and junior Aiden Ambriz-Cruz each had two hits and scored two runs. Cruz had an RBI double and stole one base.
Recording one hit each for North Montgomery were Cole, Keaton Brown, Jack Warren, Sam Woolwine and Kipton Linzie.
Charger junior Lucky Young had two RBI.
Mountie hits came from Landon Grimes, Dean McGaughey and Eli Hannum. McGaughey’s hit was a seventh inning RBI double to put his team on the scoreboard.
Southmont had opportunities to score nearly every inning but stranded 11 runners on base. The Chargers left six runners on base in the game.
North Montgomery recorded one error and the Mounties had three miscues in the Monon Athletic Conference game.
The Chargers (3-0, 2-0 MAC) play at home against Seeger (0-2) at 6 p.m. Friday. Southmont (0-2, 0-2 MAC) will play Clinton Prairie at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
