Legion Post 72 loses to Terre Haute

Posted

LINDEN — Byron Cox Post 72 manager Kyle Proctor knew his squad was playing one of the hottest teams in the Midwest.

Terre Haute Wayne Newton Post 346 left Tuesday’s game still undefeated after an offensive barrage led to a 10-0 five inning win.

After two scoreless innings, Post 364 exploded for five runs after two outs were already made. Fueled by a three-run homerun and a two-run homerun, Terre Haute never looked back and scored five more runs in the next two innings.

Another two-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning made the score 10-0 and gave Post 72 one chance to put a run on the board to avoid the 10-run rule.

It didn’t happen.

The game was delayed 15 minutes due to the weather. As the southern part of Montgomery County was getting a lot of rain, the weather around Charger Field remained partly sunny with a brisk wind lasting until the third inning.

Proctor was impressed with the Terre Haute hitters who collected eight hits, including four extra base hits.

“Those homeruns were out whether the wind was blowing or not,” Proctor said. “Terre Haute is good.”

As impressive as the offense was, Terre Haute pitcher Lincoln Jenkins was just as impressive. The lefty pitched three innings and gave up just one single to Crawfordsville’s Kyven Hill.

Jenkins was relieved in the fourth inning by Jackson Pierce who surrendered no hits in his two innings of work.

The two Post 345 pitchers did not walk and batters and the Terre Haute defense made no errors.

Post 72 starting pitcher Dillon Heaton pitched 3.1 innings and gave up seven runs while striking out four batters and issuing four walks.

Crawfordsville’s Hill pitched 1.2 innings and gave up three runs on three hits.

Terre Haute, fresh off a tournament championship in Missouri last weekend, is now 7-0. Its pitching staff has recorded five shutouts and two no-hitters and have given up just five total runs this season.

Post 72 (8-2) was scheduled to play Wednesday at Speedway Post 500. The team will travel to Evansville and play in a tournament. The local squad will play Princeton Post 25 at 7:30 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, the team will play Rockport Post 254 at 1 p.m. and Funkhouser of Evansville at 3 p.m. Post 72 will play Elberfield at 11 a.m. Sunday.

WIMC 103.9 FM will broadcast the weekend games with Jeff Nelson providing play-by-play.
