Letter: Revolutionary War vets deserve recognition

Posted

I am glad the local DAR chapter dedicated a plaque to honor the veterans of the Revolutionary War. My wife, Diane (Haffner), is descended from Captain Charles Emory, who was George Washington’s Quatermaster of the Continental Army.

After this great conflict was over, Emory was granted a large tract of land in Ohio located where modern-day Cleveland is. Later, he sold his land and moved to the Portland, Indiana area to be with his daughter, Mrs. William Shepard, and her family. The Portland library has preserved Emory’s recollections of the Revolutionary War. His son-in-law was Charles Shepard, the famous Indiana abolitionist.

Charles Emory is buried in a large cemetery in the Portland area.
