Martha Ann Gooldy born June 11, 1949, at Crawfordsville, passed away April 23, 2021, at Plainfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Frances Gooldy of Crawfordsville; step-brother Bruce Johnson of Bloomington; and nephew Brian Achenbach of Kokomo.
She is survived by her partner, Jim Boone at Plainfield; siblings, Susie (Gooldy) Achenbach and her husband Ralph Achenbach of Tipton and John Gooldy of Noblesville; step-sister Judy Johnson (Jack Crandall) of Bloomington; nieces, Laurie (Gooldy) and husband Sean Huff of Scotland, Sandy (Gooldy) and husband Dusty Walker of Amarillo, Texas, and Dale Lee Achenbach of Anderson; and nephew Wade Achenbach and wife Shelly (Maynard) Achenbach of Zionsville.
Martha graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1968 and had also attended a year of high school in England. Upon graduation she attended Butler University where she obtained her B.A degree and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She obtained her master’s degree in education from Indiana University. Upon graduation she taught reading at the Rushville Middle School from 1975 to 2007 and coached girls basketball.
She also belonged to Psi Iota Xi philanthropic sorority. Martha belonged to a book club in Rushville and then, upon moving to Plainfield, started another book club with friends growing it from four members to nine. She also enjoyed Bluegrass music, skeet shooting, and especially enjoyed attending the Clowes Memorial Hall performances with friends from Rushville, and Indianapolis Repertory Theater with Plainfield and Indianapolis friends.
She was a Master Gardener and enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens. Martha was a marvelous cook and enjoyed looking through cookbooks. When a friend’s daughter was going through severe postpartum depression, she provided comforting meals for the family. She enjoyed trying new restaurants and loved having lunch together with her friends. She introduced her Plainfield book club group to The Farm House restaurant in Bean Blossom and they all enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and meandering gardens and greenhouses.
She enjoyed visiting with her family and they called her “Turkey Lady” as they looked forward to her delicious turkey at Thanksgiving and baked ham at Easter. Martha loved going on trips with her girlfriends from Indiana and former classmate from the east coast, and was a good sport about being adventurous, even when it took her out of her comfort zone. Her family and friends will miss her bright smile and personality.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, June 11 at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, where friends may call from 5 p.m. until the time of the service Friday. Inurnment will be Saturday at Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.
