Southmont downed previously unbeaten Danville 4-3 in Saturday’s Southmont Invitational to win the championship in eight innings.
Mountie Ella Barry held the Warriors to five hits and one earned run. The sophomore hurler struck out eight and did not walk a Danville batter.
Danville led 2-0 after scoring runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Southmont tied the game in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs.
The game was tied 3-3 after seven innings and Danville scored one run in the eighth inning to take the lead setting up the exciting Mountie finish when they scored two runs to win the game behind a walk off single by Emily Simpson.
South outhit the Warriors eight to five in the contest.
In the morning game, Southmont defeated Seeger 11-1 in five innings.
Southmont scored in every inning while pounding out 10 hits.
Mountie pitcher junior Sammie Crosby pitched a three-hitter and struck out six in her five innings of work.
Barry, playing third base, had three hits, scored three times and had four RBI.
Simpson, who is batting .554 on the season, and Kaylee Turner had two hits apiece.
Southmont (4-0, 2-0 MAC) will travel to Cascade (2-0, 2-0 MAC) Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. Monon Athletic Conference game and will play the Cadets at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Mounties home field.
