LINDEN — Byron Cox Post 72 got its second win this season over Lafayette Post 11. The local team beat Post 11 5-3 on Wednesday at North Montgomery High School to improve their record to 13-2.
Like the team has done several times this season, the victory was in comeback fashion.
Trailing 2-0 going into the fourth inning, Post 72 scored three runs to take the lead.
Sam Gooch started the inning with a double followed by a walk issued to Ethan Wooten. Kyven Hill had a 2-RBI single who later scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Dillon Heaton.
It didn’t take long for Post 11 to tie the game in the fifth inning. Alex Lopez homered over the left field fence to tie the game 3-3.
Post 72 took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth frame by scoring two runs. The local team was aided by three Post 11 errors to put the runs on the board.
Crawfordsville’s Ethan Campbell picked up the win when he relieved starter Talyn Sheldon. Campbell pitched two outs in the sixth inning.
Sam Gooch earned a save by pitching the seventh inning.
Lafayette record is now 7-8.
Next for Post 72 is a throwback game to be played at noon Saturday at the old Waynetown High School diamond. The game is part of the town’s annual Freedom Festival celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Speedway Post 500 will be the opponent.
There are several connections to Waynetown youth baseball on Post 72. Keaton Brown, Aiden Ambriz-Cruz, Talyn Sheldon, Kohen Bonebrake and Ethan Campbell first learned the game playing North Montgomery youth baseball at Waynetown. Post 72 manager Kyle Proctor and assistant coach Camden Proctor also played youth baseball at Waynetown.
The connections also are represented in the opponent. Speedway assistant coach Drew Sharp grew up playing in the town.
