Mounties lose to Cadets

Homestanding Cascade defeated Southmont 14-4 in five innings on Tuesday in a Monon Athletic Conference game. The Mounties only mustered two hits against three pitchers in the game compared to the Cadets with 14 hits.

Cascade jumped out to a 4-1 first inning lead and added nine more runs in the second inning to take a 9-1 lead.

The Mounties, after scoring one run in their first at-bat, scored three runs in the fourth inning for all their runs.

Southmont’s hits came from singles by Phisher Benge and Gunnar Shirk.

Cascade recorded five extra base hits in the game including homeruns by Braxton Lewis and Delton Howry.

The Mounties (0-4, 0-3 MAC) played host Wednesday to Cascade (3-2, 3-0 MAC).

 

Chargers suffer first loss

North Montgomery fell at Western Boone 6-4 on Tuesday in a Monon Athletic Conference game.

The Chargers were stymied by Star pitcher Quinn Westerfeld who pitched seven innings and gave up just five hits and struck out nine batters.

The Chargers led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Stars took advantage of a hit batter, walk and single that loaded the bases with no outs. A single, another walk, a double and sacrifice fly equaled five runs to give the Stars a 6-2 lead.

The Chargers battled back with two runs in the sixth to make the score 6-4. However a runner was thrown out attempting to steal second with two outs to end the inning.

The Chargers had a runner picked off first base to end the game to secure the win for the Stars.

North’s Keaton Brown had two hits to lead the team’s offense.

Charger starting hurler Talyn Sheldon took the loss. The junior gave up six runs and six hits in 4.1 innings. The righty threw 78 pitches with 48 thrown for a strike. One run was unearned after a Charger error led to the Stars’ first run.

North Montgomery (4-1, 2-1 MAC) played host Wednesday to Western Boone (2-4, 1-2 MAC).

 

Wildcats beat Mustangs

One night after being beaten 21-7 by Fountain Central, the Wildcats returned the favor and defeated the Mustangs 6-3 on Tuesday.

South Vermillion scored three runs in the first inning, but the Mustangs answered with three runs to make the score 3-3 after two innings. However, the Wildcats went on to score three more runs and held the Mustangs scoreless for the rest of the game.

Fountain Central Ryan Mitchell led the Mustang offense with two hits, scored a run and had two RBI.

Pitcher Ayden Batchelor went 6.1 innings and gave up six runs, three earned, while striking out six.

Fountain Central (1-4) will entertain Southmont (0-4) on Friday.

 

SOFTBALL

Mounties shut out in loss

Southmont’s offense experienced something unusual so far this season. The Mounties were no-hit at Cascade in a 2-0 loss Tuesday.

Mountie pitcher Ella Barry had another good outing. The sophomore allowed just five hits and two runs; one run was unearned. Barry struck out eight Cadets and gave up no walks.

One of Cascade’s hits was a homerun by Macey Pugh in the Cadet’s last at-bat.

Cadet pitcher Grace Parks pitched a complete game and struck out 10 and walked three.

The two teams played again Wednesday at Southmont (4-1,2-1 MAC) when the Mounties attempted to give Cascade (4-1, 3-0 MAC) their first Monon Athletic Conference loss.

 

Chargers lose to Western Boone

North Montgomery lost at Monon Athletic Conference for Western Boone 13-0 in five innings on Tuesday.

Western Boone held the Chargers to just five hits and the Stars were aided by five North Montgomery errors.

Charger Kendra McClamroch pitched five innings and gave up eight hits and seven earned runs.

Western Boone (3-2, 1-2 MAC) played Wednesday at North Montgomery (0-6, 0-3 MAC).

 

TENNIS

Chargers down Gophers

North Montgomery got back on the winning track Tuesday with a 5-0 win over Clinton Prairie. All matches were won in two games.

Charger winners were No. 1 singles Kate Merica defeating Cynthia Roache 6-2, 6-1 and No. 2 singles Cassidy Thomas over Adrianna Perkins 6-1, 6-0. No. 3 singles Caelyn Carpenter defeated Jessica Roche 6-1, 6-3.

The Charger No. 1 doubles team of Lauren Kelp and Isabelle Hamby beat Avery Wertz and Sydne Newcomer 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 2 doubles match, Izzy Shrader and Scarlett Hamm defeated Macy Ward and Addison Palmer 6-2, 6-2.

 

Mustangs defeat Parke Heritage

Fountain Central defeated Parke Heritage 5-0 on Tuesday.

Winning for the Mustangs (3-0, 2-0 WRC) were No. 1 singles Elise Webb over Mackenzie Reath 6-1, 6-0 and No. 2 singles Laney Hoagland over Emma Pezan 6-0, 6-0. Mustang No. 3 singles Esme Muniz defeated Lilah Brown 6-0, 6-0.

In No. 1 doubles, Mustangs Savannah Bowers and Lilly Peterson beat Jenna Newnum and McKinlee Jenkins 6-0, 7-5. Fountain Central’s No. 2 doubles of Rya Jackson and Jayden Larkin defeated Marissa Liebrandt and Amelia Woodard 6-3, 7-5.

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL

Chargers defeat Tri-West

North Montgomery seventh grade baseball team opened the season with a win over Tri-West in a last inning comeback scoring 6 runs to win the game 11-10.

Charger Aaron Welch started the game and kept it close for three innings. Nolan Catlin pitched the final two innings to pick up the win.

North had four hits, including three by Welch, and received 12 walks in the game. The Chargers had eight stolen bases.

The Chargers played at Western Boone on Wednesday.
