Chargers beat Bethesda

North Montgomery defeated Bethesda Christian 18-5 in five innings Saturday at home on North Montgomery Youth Baseball Day. A total of 23 tee ball to middle school teams were introduced between innings.

The Chargers wasted little time on the field taking command of the game. North Montgomery scored 13 first-inning runs and never looked back.

Charger senior Crew Cole was 2-for-3 in the game with four RBI and stole four bases. Aiden Ambriz-Cruz was also 2-for-3, scoring two runs and stealing three bases.

North Montgomery set a school record that had stood since 1972 by stealing 16 bases in the game. Carter Thompson stole three and Blake Welch stole two. Cooper Stephens, Jack Warren, Keaton Brown and Lucky Young added one stolen base apiece.

Charger Lincoln Heide recorded the win on the mound. The sophomore surrendered three hits and three runs while striking out three in two innings.

Charger Keaton Brown pitched one inning and struck out the side. Lucky Young pitched the final two innings and struck out five Patriots.

North Montgomery (9-2, 4-2 MAC) will play Tuesday at Monon Athletic Conference rival Frankfort (7-4, 4-2 MAC). The Chargers will play Frankfort at home Wednesday. Bethesda (6-5) was to play at Cloverdale (4-4) on Monday.

 

Tigers down Athenians

Crawfordsville traveled Saturday to Lebanon and lost 11-1 in five innings.

After Crawfordsville scored one run in the top of the first inning, the Tigers responded with nine runs in their half of the inning.

Lebanon had five hits including two doubles and benefited from four walks and one Athenian error in the inning.

Four Crawfordsville hurlers gave up just five hits but walked 11 in four innings of work while the Athenian defense committed five errors.

Crawfordsville (6-6, 3-3 MAC) will play host to county and Monon Athletic Conference rival Southmont (2-7, 0-6 MAC) Tuesday and travel to Southmont on Wednesday. Lebanon (5-8) travels Tuesday to Lafayette Harrison (6-6).

 

Mounties earn win

Southmont beat South Putnam 6-5 on Friday in walk-off fashion in eight innings.

With the score tied at 5-5, the Mounties’ Eden Hernandez was hit by a pitch before Caden Miller walked. Cooper Scott then laid down a sacrifice bunt advancing both runners.

Later in the inning, with two outs, pitch runner Caden White was able to score to give the Mounties the win.

Southmont led 3-1 before the Eagles scored two runs in each the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-3 lead but the Mounties answered to tie the game with two runs on their own.

After one out, the Mounties’ Kason Bushong and Landon Grimes were each hit by a pitch. Later in the inning with two outs Dean McGaughey delivered a single to center field that scored Bushong. Grimes, who was on third, scored the tying run on a passed ball.

McGaughey was 2-for-4 at the plate and scored one run with one RBI. The righty picked up the win by pitching the last inning.

Mountie Gunnar Shirk pitched the first five innings and gave up one run on just three hits while striking out four.

The Mounties (2-7, 0-6 MAC) will travel Tuesday to county rival Crawfordsville (6-6, 3-3 MAC) and host the Athenians on Wednesday.

 

Mustangs sweep Falcons

Fountain Central had two big Wabash River Conference wins at North Vermillion on Saturday. The first game score was 12-1 in five innings and the second win was 16-6 in six innings.

In the first game, the Mustangs jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings holding the Falcons to just a single run in the fifth inning.

Mustang Asher Davis was 2-for-2 batting with two RBI. Lead-off hitter Paul Adams scored three runs in the game.

Ayden Batchelor pitched five innings and surrendered four hits while striking out nine Falcons.

In the second game, Batchelor drove in four runs with four hits.

Davis was 3-for-4 and scored five runs and collected two RBI.

The Mustangs scored eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 16-3.

Uriah Wildman picked up the win by pitching 5.1 innings while striking out nine.

Fountain Central (4-7, 4-4 WRC) will play host Tuesday to Wabash River Conference rival Covington (6-4, 4-0 WRC) and will play at Covington on Wednesday.

 

GOLF

Tri-West wins Mountie Invite

Highly regarded Tri-West won the 11-team Mountie Invitational on Saturday at Crawfordsville Country Club.

The Bruins shot a 312 led by co-medalist Blake Woodland who fired a 72.

Greencastle finished second with a 318 score. The Tiger Cubs’ Ben Zellers was a co-medalist by shooting a 72.

Southmont Red tied with Danville with 330 for third place.

Austin Foley shot a 73 to lead the Mounties. Other Southmont scores were Carter Ludlow 82, Ethan Hutchison 89, Noah Vogel 86 and Carson Vaught 94.

Parke Heritage finished fourth with a 341 and were led by Treigh Schelsky’s 82.

North Montgomery fired a 344 for a fifth-place finish. Charger scores were Isaac Hamby 82, Hayden Allen 84, Brody Roche and Jackson Grundy both with a score of 89. Dylan Priddy shot 106.

Crawfordsville shot a 346 to finish sixth. Athenian scores were Caiden Murray 83, Owen Pierce 85, Jude Hurt 85, Jordan Archer 93 and Gage Frazee 101.

Other team scores were from seventh to 11th were Western Boone 372, Clinton Central 380, Frankfort 381 and North Putnam 403.

 

SOFTBALL

Athenians win in extra inning

Crawfordsville’s Christina Susdorf doubled home Molly Pierce for the win in the eighth inning to defeat visiting Eminence 7-6.

The win was accomplished in come-back fashion. The Athenians scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh frame to tie the game 6-6.

The Athenians had five hits in the seventh to even up the score.

Crawfordsville collected 17 hits in the contest. Susdorf and Laken Suitors each went 3-for-5. Pierce, Tori Truax and Josslynn Simmons. Hailli Omundson and Addison Hauk all had two hits.

Pierce pitched a complete game for the win. The senior struck out eight Eels.

Crawfordsville (2-11, 0-6 MAC) was schedule to play at home against Bethesda Christian on Monday. The Athenians will play host to Southmont (8-2, 4-2 MAC) Tuesday and travel to Southmont on Wednesday. Southmont was set to play Covington on Monday before this week’s Monon Athletic Conference games.

 

Mustangs split with Falcons

Fountain Central split a doubleheader Saturday against Wabash River Conference rival North Vermillion. The Mustangs won the first game 15-14 and lost the second game 18-13.

The Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning when Braelyn Kiger doubled to score three runs to win the game.

Oliviah Jones, Patience Bixler and Kynleigh Elkins each had three hits as part of the total 18 Mustang hits.

Kiger pitched the final four innings to pick up the win.

In the second game, North Vermillion broke an 11-11 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning and added two more runs in the sixth frame.

Fountain Central’s Lillian Bennett had three hits and two RBI in the loss.

Fountain Central (7-7, 3-5 WRC) will entertain Covington (9-5, 4-0 WRC) Tuesday and go to Covington on Wednesday.

 

TENNIS

Chargers lose to Wildcats

North Montgomery lost 3-2 Saturday to South Vermillion.

Charger No. 1 singles Kate Merica lost to Jaci McClain 7-5, 6-3 and No. 2 singles Cassidy Thomas lost to Ali Cunning 7-5, 6-3.

Charger No. 3 singles Caelyn Carpenter defeated Andra Skinner 6-4, 6-0.

North’s No. 1 doubles team of Izzy Shrader and Lauren Kelp lost to Olivia Major and Mia Garzonlini 7-6 (5), 6-3.

Charger No. 2 doubles Annie Hess and Scarlette Hamm defeated Lexi Roman and Landry Uselman 6-3, 6-2.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Chargers compete at Guerin Catholic

North Montgomery girls and boys competed Saturday at the Guerin Catholic Invitational. The Charger boys placed fourth out of 10 teams and the girls placed sixth out of 11 teams.

North’s Drew Dark was a double winner by claiming first in the 1600 and 3200.

Charger Eli Peebles won long jump.

The girls did not have an event winner

Boys team scores were Greenfield 136, Guerin Catholic 116.5, Hamilton Heights 104.5, North Montgomery 86, Western 55, Frankton 46.5, Lafayette Central Catholic 25, University 22, Seton Catholic 10 and Fort Wayne Canterbury 7.

Girls team scores were Mount Vernon (Fortville) 153.5, Greenfield 109.5, Hamilton Heights 96, Guerin Catholic 82, Western 47, North Montgomery 42, Fort Wayne Canterbury 24, Seton Catholic 19, University 17 and Lafayette Central Catholic 10.
