Twila Marie (Holycross) Zackmire, 86, of rural Veedersburg passed away at 9:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at Franciscan Health Hospital, Indianapolis.
Twila was born Aug. 10, 1934, at Wolcott, Indiana, the daughter of the late Nile Leon and Mary Pauline (Cain) Holycross. Twila moved to rural Veedersburg in 1940 and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1952. She went on and graduated from Smart Appearance Beauty College in Terre Haute.
Twila worked as a hair stylist for 25 years. She also worked at General Foods in Lafayette for 15 years and later at Sommer Elementary School in Crawfordsville for 10 years, retiring in 2010.
Twila was a 50-year member of the Fern Chapter #194 Order of the Eastern Star and served as past matron. She was a member of the Sterling Christian Church. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. She formerly enjoyed riding her motorcycle.
On June 6, 1953, Twila married Donald Roy Zackmire in the New Liberty Church in rural Veedersburg. Donald preceded her in death Nov. 20, 1999.
Twila leaves behind son Michael Zackmire, Veedersburg; daughter Phyllis (Randy) Stembaugh, Veedersburg; and four grandchildren, Nicholas Stembaugh and Jessica Stembaugh, both of Veedersburg, Devon Zackmire, Lafayette, and Maysa (Jake) Turner, Perrysville; sister Sharon (Joe) Barton, Crawfordsville.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Loren, Darrell and Jerry Holycross; an infant sister, Lorene Holycross, which was a twin to Loren and a sister, Loretta Summers.
A gravesite service for Twila will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22 at Wallace Lutheran Cemetery, with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating.
