Crawfordsville held its annual Athenian Invitational on Saturday in two locations. Due to the wet weather, the Athenians’ first game was played at Wabash College. The championship game was played at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette.
The Athenians lost to Lafayette Central Catholic 8-5 in the championship game after beating Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter 18-0 in five innings in the first game.
In the championship game, the Knights were leading 5-0 until the Athenians scored two runs in the top of the fourth. However, Central Catholic added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead to 8-2.
Crawfordsville scored three runs in the top of the sixth frame but did not score again.
The Athenians had eight hits led by Henry Bannon who was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mason Miller and Jacob Lee each had two hits.
Crawfordsville’s Braiden Scholte took the loss on the mound by giving up five runs on seven hits in three innings of work. Ethan Campbell pitched the last three innings surrendering three runs on three hits. Each Athenian pitcher recorded three strikeouts.
In the first game against Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter, Crawfordsville had 16 hits in the game. The Athenians put the game away by scoring 10 runs in the second inning.
Crawfordsville’s Landon Gerold pitched a five inning no-hitter. The junior recorded nine strikeouts and only walked two batters.
Gerold was 2-for-3 hitting and drove in three runs and scored two runs.
Other Athenians with two hits were Mason McCarty, Miller and Schlote.
Crawfordsville (5-4, 2-2 MAC) plays Tuesday at Monon Athletic Conference foe Cascade (4-2, 4-0 MAC) and will play the Cadets at 6 p.m. Wednesday at home.
