Board rewards volunteers with parking passes

Volunteers for Crawfordsville Main Street are going to save a little money after a Wednesday decision by members of the Crawfordsville Board of Public Works and Safety.

CMS president Sue Lucas brought a plan to the board which will help volunteers while downtown.

Lucas asked permission to display a car window tag so volunteers can park downtown while they work without a parking penalty.

She said the idea came from a city employee and she thought it was a good idea.

“One of the city’s parking enforcement officers suggested we use a window tag to identify volunteers,” Lucas said. “Often times our volunteers are downtown cleaning or setting up for events and it is easy to forget the two-hour limit.”

Lucas said in the past CMS volunteers would just pay the fine for parking over two hours.

“Many times, we have gotten so busy we forgot to move our vehicles,” Lucas said. “We have always graciously paid the fee, but we think this is a good idea.

Lucas said the tags would be used for things like cleanup days and when decorating the downtown. She also said she would distribute the tags to volunteers and collect them when the group’s work was complete.

Crawfordsville Police Chief Aaron Mattingly told the board he had no problem with the request since CMS does so many good things for the community.

Main Street volunteers are expected to be downtown today cleaning the area, starting at the fountain at Main and Green streets.

The Downtown Farmers’ Market received permission to close Pike Street at Pike Place for this year’s market season. The market will begin May 6 and continue Saturdays, weather permitting, until Sept. 30. The market will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The board approved the purchase of wastewater equipment in the amount of $198,000. The funds will come from the city’s State Revolving Loan Fund which is for capital improvements. The city has paid the invoice and will be reimbursed with the SRF funds.
