LINDEN — North Montgomery defeated 2A No. 1 Greencastle 6-5 on Tuesday at Charger Field.
The Chargers led nearly the whole game as North junior pitcher Talyn Sheldon shut down the potent Tiger Cub offense from the second to the seventh innings.
After Greencastle scored two runs in their first at-bat, the Chargers answered with two runs of their own. Eventually North led 6-2 until the final stanza when Greencastle added three unearned runs after the Chargers made three errors in the inning.
Sheldon caught the last out on a popup headed to foul ball territory along the third base line with Tiger Cub runners on first and second to give the Chargers a big Monon Athletic Conference victory.
Sheldon pitched a complete game surrendering five runs, two of which were earned, and struck out six.
The Charger offense was led by Aiden Ambriz-Cruz who had two hits and scored two runs with a stolen base. Jack Warren was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Crew Cole also had two hits and scored two runs.
Greencastle’s Trevor Long led the Tiger Cubs with two hits with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Charger defense made several good plays including a 6-4-3 double play in the top of the fifth to get out of a late inning jam.
The two teams meet again Wednesday at Greencastle (8-1, 4-1 MAC). After Wednesday North Montgomery will play host to Fountain Central at 11 a.m. Saturday. The game will be Youth Baseball League.
