I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the generous donors of the Meals on Wheels program. Thanks to their kindness, all of our meals for the month of December were fully paid for, which was a true gift.
Since its beginning in 1969, this program has grown to be a vital heartbeat in our town. Today, they have approximately 60 clients, 25 dedicated kitchen volunteers, and 75 volunteer drivers who deliver meals five days a week. But they deliver much more than just food; they deliver companionship. These drivers have become fast friends over the years—they are always upbeat, checking in on our well-being and asking how they can help.
In my own small way, I try to return that kindness by offering the drivers a small American flag and a piece of candy. It may seem like a small gesture, but seeing the smile it brings to their faces reminds me of something my late mother, Golda Wharff, used to say: “A big smile is worth a pocket full of gold.”
Her name meant “Gold,” but she knew that the most valuable things in life aren’t found in a purse, but in the way we treat one another. To the donors, the volunteers, and the drivers who bring that “gold” to our doors every day: thank you for your service and your hearts.
With love and affection,
Sondra Lyons
