The Crawfordsville Fire Department responded to a structure fire around 12:49 a.m. Tuesday at Swick’s Creekside BBQ, formerly Creekside Lodge.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire conditions extending through the roof. The fire was brough under control around 2 a.m., with crews remaining on scene into the morning to complete overhaul operations.

At this time, the fire is considered unintentional and the cause undetermined.

The property in the 600 block of Lafayette Avenue had recently come under new ownership and has been owned for just over two months by Joe and Candace Swick, who also operate Swick’s Kitchen and Emporium in downtown Crawfordsville, along with Steve Tomamichel.

The building was deemed a total loss.

In a statement shared on social media, stating that the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

“Our local police discovered the fire during routine rounds and responded immediately. From there, our fire department and first responders acted swiftly and with incredible care, not only protecting lives, but also preventing further damage to the surrounding woods and Sugar Creek,” the owners said in the post.

The Swicks also said that there were no injuries.

“We truly cannot express how thankful we are for every person involved,” the owners said.

They added, “While we are heartbroken to confirm that the building and its contents are a total loss … we are holding tight to what matters most — our people are safe, and this community has already began wrapping its arms around us.”

Due to the incident, Swick’s Kitchen and Emporium location also will be closed this week.

“This is a difficult moment for our family and our team, and we would deeply appreciate your prayers as we begin to process what comes next,” the owners said.

They said they plan to rebuild.
