Citizens’ share concerns about thoroughfare plan

Posted

Montgomery County has drafted a thoroughfare plan. Two new roads are being planned in northern Montgomery County that would divide our family farm into four pieces — C.R. 100E (Concord Road) would be extended to C.R. 700N and C.R. 650N would be a new road, connecting C.R. 150E to C.R. 100W. The projected cost is $36,400,000. These roads go through prime farmland, wetlands and past a federally protected bird sanctuary, that is in the USDA’s Wetland Reserve Program. One of the consultants from HWC said this would open up hundreds of acres for development. According to the comprehensive plan, prime farmland and wetlands are to be protected.

We currently have C.R. 550N and C.R. 800N that serve our needs in this area. According to the Thoroughfare Plan, there will be little change to traffic volumes in the next 18 years.

There is a public hearing for the plan at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the courthouse. Please let your opinions be known to the plan commission members and county commissioners.

The thoroughfare plan can be viewed on the Montgomery County website at www.montgomerycounty.in.gov and then follow the link for the plan commission.
