NEW MARKET — Montgomery County track and field teams met Saturday for the county track meet. Braving the cold temperatures, Crawfordsville girls and North Montgomery boys were crowned champions.

The girls meet came down to the last race to see who would reign as champions. With North Montgomery leading 70.5 to 68, the Athenian girls knew the 4x400 relay team needed to win.

Crawfordsville won the deciding race in 4:16.05, well ahead of the Chargers’ time of 4:28.75, which meant the Athenians won by 1.5 points. The Athenian relay team was composed of Maesa Horton, Caroline Melevage, Johnson and Alea Seward.

Final girls’ meet scores were Crawfordsville 75, North Montgomery 73.5 and Southmont 18.5.

The Athenians had eight champions and North Montgomery had six.

Southmont had two champs with Molly Williams in pole vault and Layla Gomez in shot put.

Crawfordsville head coach Amanda Elizondo knew the meet would be close between the two rivals but she felt confident in her team.

“We knew North had a great squad this year that it was going to be a close meet,” Elizondo said. “It was nerve racking, but our 4x400 team is pretty solid and has been in high pressure situations before. We had the utmost confidence in them that they would go out and compete and bring it home.”

The boys meet was not quite as dramatic. North Montgomery won 10 of the 16 events. Crawfordsville and Southmont each had three champs.

Final scores were North Montgomery 73, Crawfordsville 60.5 and Southmont 35.5.

Charger Clayton Brown was a four-event champ. The junior won the long jump, 400m dash, 300m dash and was a member of the winning 4x400 relay team.

North Montgomery Coach Corey Bucher was pleased with the effort of both of his squads stating several  Chargers performed well.

“We had great senior and upperclassmen leadership,” Bucher said. “They have set the tone all season in practice, at meets, and doing all the small things that make a huge difference. The kids kept being positive with each other all day and encouraging each other all day. Many of our kids had great days and outperformed their seeds and had season best times.”
