Letter: Vote for Frey for commissioner

Posted

I would ordinarily wait until closer to Election Day to write this letter, but given that many of us are already voting by mail, now is the time. Also, given these difficult times, we are all seeing that strong, competent, experienced leadership matters. John Frey is, without a doubt, such a leader. I urge you to vote for him in the current primary election.

Over the past two years I have been a League of Women Voters Observer of the County Redevelopment Commission. (My endorsement is completely personal; the League does not officially endorse any candidates.) Frey serves on this commission, so I have had the opportunity to observe him at work on many occasions, at close to thirty meetings.

I have come away with great respect and appreciation for Frey and the others serving. They put in long hours researching, discussing and deciding on how best to move Montgomery County forward, and they have come up with an effective long-term plan for growth that should guide us for years to come.

While not the chair of the commission, Frey is clearly a leading force. He always came to meetings having studied the key issues, and with thoughtful and relevant questions for the experts who were reporting and for his fellow commission members. Frey seemed to grasp all the complex financial, legal, engineering and marketing details being discussed, and when he wasn’t clear he did not hesitate to ask clarifying questions.

I observed his hard work and time commitment, and I also noted Frey’s communication skills, warm personality and sense of humor. His frequent columns in this newspaper attest to his desire to communicate and be open with the public about the work of our commissioners.

Now is not a time to change leadership. Frey’s energy, ideas, willingness to listen and ability to make difficult decisions have been central to many of the positive changes occurring in our community. As we work to implement those changes, Frey should be given the chance to continue working for the betterment of Montgomery County.
