President Steve Frees welcomed members to the Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association meeting on May 11 held in the Crawfordsville District Public Library. Following the pledge, Kim Nixon gave the invocation. Lunch was provided by Sunshine In a Box and table decorations were provided by Sheryl Starnes, Kim Nixon and Jerilyn Yerkes. The basket donation money will go to help Camp Milligan.
Vice President Kathy Steele asked members for help with program ideas for the 2026-27 year. She also needs members that would be willing to provide the invocation before our lunch.
The annual memorial service was presented by Barb Foster, Linda Sabol and Mary Lou Dawald. The memorial service honors Montgomery County teachers who have passed away during the past year. Four MCRTA members and six other Montgomery County teachers were remembered and honored for their service to our schools. The teachers honored were Lois Burkett, Betty Moffitt, Judy McFerran, Melvin Vance, Sally Remaklus, Jon Hester, Paul Cass, Mike Morrison, Bill Lawter and Robin Garman.
President Frees called the business meeting to order. He read a poem entitled “Teachers Make a Difference.” President Frees installed the 2026-27 officers. They are: President Frees, Vice President Steele, Secretary Jerilyn Yerkes and Treasurer Sheryl Starnes.
The April meeting minutes which were sent to members were approved. Foster gave the treasurer’s report. Our balance at the end of April is $2,237.38. A motion was made and seconded to accept the treasurer’s report. The motion passed. Foster read a thank-you note from Larry Paarlberg for the $75 given from MCRTA for the summer ArchiCamp.
Susie Minch is collecting the yearly $7 dues. She will send out a dues reminder to members in the summer.
Mary Grimes gave the community service committee report. She read a thank-you note for our donation to the Archaius Ranch. Nancy Buckles sent one sympathy card to a member.
Steve told members that we are going to have a book exchange. If you have books that you would like to exchange, bring them to our meetings.
President Frees mentioned that he, along with Steele and Nixon will attend the State IRTA meeting in June. He congratulated Cherlyn Hunter for being the community service volunteer of the year for Montgomery County.
