The Southmont volleyball team has gotten hot at the right time. Winners of 10 straight games, the Mounties are hoping to use all the momentum to win the one game 2A regional against Heritage Christian at 4 p.m. Saturday at Monrovia High School.
Heritage Christian’s record stands at 19-9 and defeated Park Tudor and Covenant Christian to bring home the 2A Sectional No. 42.
It is no coincidence that Southmont’s winning streak coincides with the addition of Claire Peacock. The senior was forced to set out the first part of the season after transferring from Crawfordsville over the summer.
Peacock, who stands 5’10”, has given the Mounties another front row player providing more depth. In 63 sets played Peacock has recorded 67 kills, 32 blocks and 161 digs. She also has served 36 aces and has 486 assists.
Southmont’s record is 19-10. Since the addition of Peacock, who played her first game on Sept. 9 in a 3-1 loss to Clinton Prairie, the Mounties have put together a 16-5 record.
Two of Mountie regular season losses to Parke Heritage and South Vermillion turned into wins in last week’s sectional.
Mountie Ella Barry has put together a great season. The junior leads her team in kills, blocks and aces. Southmont’s Kaylee Turner leads the Mounties in digs.
Heritage Christian is led by seniors Ella Mensch who has 387 kills and Bethany Ring who leads her team in aces and assists.
The winner of Saturday’s regional match will advance to the semi-state. The site of the semi-state will be determined Sunday. There will be 16 2A teams vying for eight regional championships.
