Athenians beat Red Devils
Crawfordsville scored all of their runs in their last three at-bats to beat West Lafayette 8-2 on Saturday during Crawfordsville Youth Baseball Day.
The Red Devils led 1-0 after three innings until Crawfordsville took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams scored in their part of the fifth innings.
Crawfordsville broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The biggest hit of the inning came from junior Henry Bannon’s 2-run homerun over the left field fence.
Bannon was 2-for-4 with 3-RBI and Ethan Campbell was 2-for-2 with 2-RBI including a double.
West Lafayette (5- was held to nine hits.
Campbell pitched three innings to pick up the win. Landon Gerald pitched the last frame and surrendered just one hit.
Jayden Jimenez was the Athenian starter and surrendered just one run in three innings.
Crawfordsville’s eight run came from nine hits.
Crawfordsville (11-9, 6-4 MAC) will play at North Montgomery (14-4, 7-3 MAC) at 7 p.m. tonight and face the Chargers at home on Thursday.
Chargers lose to Gophers
North Montgomery traveled Saturday to Clinton Prairie and saw their five-game win streak come to an end. The Gophers beat the Chargers 8-3.
Clinton Prairie scored six runs in the first two innings. A first inning home run put the home team ahead 1-0 after one inning and the Gophers added five scores in the second inning.
The loss on the mound was shouldered by sophomore Charger Carter Thompson who gave up the early six runs. Lincoln Heide pitched 3.1 innings in relief and surrendered two runs. Aiden Ambriz-Cruz pitched the final inning surrendering one hit.
North Montgomery committed three errors in the game.
The Chargers (14-4, 7-3 MAC) will play host to Monon Athletic Conference and county rival Crawfordsville (11-9, 6-4 MAC) at 7 p.m. today. The two teams will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at Crawfordsville.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL
Charger 8th loses first game
North Montgomery Middle School eighth grade is no longer undefeated. The Chargers lost 6-4 Saturday at North Montgomery.
Greencastle had 10 hits in the game compared to North’s six hits.
Chargers Carson Neal and Paxton Heide each had two hits for the home team.
North Montgomery (8-1) played at Cascade on Monday and will travel to Tecumseh on Thursday.
TENNIS
Mustangs find success in Invite
Fountain Central held its own invitational Saturday and ended with some success. Other teams in the tournament were McCutcheon, South Putnam and Lebanon.
The Mustangs scored 15 points to defeat second place McCutcheon with 11 points. Lebanon scored eight points and South Putnam scored one.
Mustang No. 2 singles Laney Hoagland went 2-0 as did Fountain Central’s No. 3 singles Esme Muniz.
Fountain Central’s No. 1 doubles team of Lilly Peterson and Savannah Bowers was 2-0. No. 2 doubles team of Jayden Larkin and Lydia Perkins finished 1-1. Fountain Central’s No. 1 singles Elise Webb was 1-1.
