Athenians earn sweep of Stars
Crawfordsville traveled Wednesday to Monon Athletic Conference rival Western Boone and won both games of a doubleheader.
The first game was highlighted by two of the best pitchers in the MAC. Crawfordsville’s Henry Bannon and Western Boone’s Quinn Westerfeld went toe to toe with the Athenians winning 2-1.
Bannon pitched all seven innings and gave up just three hits. The junior struck out seven and did not surrender a walk.
Westerfeld also went the distance and gave up seven hits and stuck out four. The lefty did not walk a batter.
After the score was tied 1-1 after the first inning, Crawfordsville broke the tie in the fourth inning with the help of a Western Boone error to put the score 2-1.
The second game was won by the Athenians 6-1. The Athenians made the best from four Star errors.
Athenian Landon Gerold was solid by pitching 4.2 innings and surrendering four hits and striking out three. Ethan Campbell earned the save by allowing one hit and striking out three in the final 2.1 innings to earn a save.
Athenians Matt McCarty, Jacob Lee and Jayden Jimeniz each had two hits. Crawfordsville totaled 10 hits in the game.
Crawfordsville (10-9, 6-4 MAC) plays West Lafayette (5-11) at 11 a.m. Saturday at home. Western Boone (11-8, 5-5 MAC) played Lebanon (6-12) on Thursday.
Chargers complete sweep of Cougars
In a game played Wednesda at Wabash College, North Montgomery defeated Monon Athletic Conference rival North Putnam 4-3.
North Montgomery’s offense was led by Adien Ambriz-Cruz who had three hits who had three hits, 2-RBI and scored one run. The junior also swiped two bases.
Charger sophomore Carter Thompson was 2-for-3 in the game.
North pitcher Talyn Sheldon pitched six innings and gave up three runs on nine hits.
Lucky Young pitched the final inning to pick up a save.
North Montgomery (14-3, 7-3 MAC) will host Benton Central (6-11) at 6 p.m. Friday and will travel to Clinton Prairie (10-5) for a 10 a.m. Saturday game.
SOFTBALL
Stars sweep Athenians
Western Boone defeated Crawfordsville twice on Wednesday. The Stars shut out the Athenians with scores 13-0 and 15-0.
In the first game, Crawfordsville only had one hit from Christina Susdorf.
Crawfordsville committed four errors to help the Stars.
In the second loss, Crawfordsville had two hits, one each by Susdorf and Josslynn Simmons.
The Athenians (2-17, 0-9 MAC) will entertain Cloverdale (4-9) on Friday.
TENNIS
Cville beats Southmont
Crawfordsville defeated Southmont 3-2 on Wednesday on the Mounties home court.
Winners for Crawfordsville were No. 2 singles Mabel Hoar, the No. 1 doubles team of Isla Seward and Alyana Hall and the No. 2 doubles team of Elliot Baker and Sarah Melevage.
Names of Southmont players were not reported.
Mustangs top Bronchos
Fountain Central traveled to Lafayette Jeff and defeated the Bronchos 4-1.
Winning for the Mustangs at No. 2 singles was Laney Hoagland who beat Julia Dantas 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 3 singles Esme Muniz beat Carina Griffee 6-4, 6-1.
Mustang No. 1 doubles Savannah Bowers and Lilly Jackson defeated Ava Brittinger and Sophia Brttinger 6-4, 7-5. No. 2 doubes Jayden Larkin and Rya Jackson beat Leici Cook and Aby Bullock 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Fountain Central will host their own invitational on Saturday. Other teams participating are Lebanon, McCutcheon and South Putnam.
GOLF
North beats Gophers
North Montgomery defeated Clinton Prairie 163-197 on Wednesday at Rocky Ridge Golf Club.
Chargers scores were Isaac Hamby 43 (co-medalist) and Brody Roche and Jackson Grundy who each shot a 46. Chase Tipton carded a 48.
North Montgomery will play host Monday to Greencastle at Rocky Ridge.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD
C’ville girls, North boys win county titles
County teams participated in the County Middle School Track and Field meet at North Montgomery on Wednesday.
Crawfordsville was crowned the girls champion with 61 points. North Montgomery scored 57 points and Southmont finished with 37 points.
North Montgomery won the boys meet by scoring 73 points. Crawfordsville scored 53 and Southmont had 37 points.
MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS
Mounties beat Chargers
Southmont defeated North Montgomery 3-2 on Wednesday. The Mounties were victorious in all three singles.
Southmont winners were No. 1 singles Lea Gregg beat Bella Hutson 8-2 and No. 2 singles Alise Bradshaw defeated Allie Hunter 8-2. No. 3 singles Izzy Roberts beat Madi Horton 8-5.
Chargers’ No. 1 doubles Millie Snyder and Bryn Fitch beat Andrea Allen and Rachel Reimondo, 8-2. No. 2 doubles Chargers Haleigh King and Emma Davis defeated Kailyn Howard and Anna Fenton 8-7.
