Public meeting slated for Lake Waveland project

WAVELAND — The HOA of the lakeside village of Byron announces the launch of an initiative focused on improving water quality and protecting the long-term health of Lake Waveland and its surrounding drainage.

The project will begin with a public meeting at 11 a.m. June 6 at the Waveland Town Hall, 108 E. Howard St., Waveland. Reservations are not required, and all lake residents, visitors and community members are encouraged to attend.

This project is funded in part through an Indiana Department of Natural Resource Lake and River Enhancement Program grant awarded to support local, community-driven water quality improvement efforts. The Lake Waveland project aims to assess current lake and watershed conditions, identify opportunities for water quality improvements, and engage local residents in shaping future restoration and conservation priorities. The project will include watershed mapping, historic data review, in-lake water chemistry and aquatic plant community assessments, water chemistry and biological in stream assessments, shoreline assessments and identification of potential water quality improvement projects.

“This initiative gives the Lake Waveland community a voice in protecting one of our region’s most valued natural resources,” said project coordinator Sara Peel. “Together, we’ll gather data, develop goals and plan practical, voluntary strategies to improve water quality for generations to come.”

Over the coming months, the project team will work with the Lakeside Village of Byron HOA, local landowners and regional partners to assess lake and stream water quality, collect public input and develop a comprehensive watershed diagnostic study.
