James Dale Hatfield, known to family and friends as Jim, passed away on June 19, 2026, at IU Methodist, Indianapolis, at the age of 73.
Jim was born on Feb. 3, 1953, in Bedford, Indiana, to Oren Dale Hatfield and Dorothy Ann (Williams) Hatfield.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Hatfield; his four siblings, Brenda Sue Adams, Sandra Gail Mundell, Timothy Lew Hatfield and David Lee Hatfield; and his four children from his first marriage to Denise Elaine (Young) Hatfield: Jesika Leigh Hatfield, Jody Lew Hatfield, Janel Laine Hatfield and Joel Amos Hatfield. He also had several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim graduated from Moody Bible Institute and went on to serve as a minister in several churches throughout Indiana, including a significant portion of his career at Waynetown Baptist Church.
In addition to his ministry, Jim was an accomplished carpenter. He enjoyed creating puzzles, bows, bunk beds, tables, and many other handcrafted projects.
In his later years, Jim spent many hours researching his family’s genealogy, fascinated by the colorful history of the Hatfield name. He enjoyed spirited debates, meaningful conversations, and a distinctive sense of humor that he passed down to his children. Jim will be remembered for his faith, craftsmanship, curiosity, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
According to his wished Jim will be cremated. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
