Mary Edie Cox, formerly of Darlington, passed away Sunday afternoon, Aug. 30, 2026, at the Ben-Hur Home. She was 92.

Mary Edie started as a teacher’s aide, before becoming a librarian, both at the Darlington Library and Darlington Middle School. She retired from Sugar Creek Elementary. She also served as assistant golf coach for the Southmont girl’s golf team for three years. In her youth, she enjoyed horseback riding and later she spent time camping and going fishing. She wrote poetry and folklore, where she used her skills as a dramatic storyteller. She was a long-time member of the Darlington Christian Church.

Born Dec. 1, 1933, in Crawfordsville, she was the daughter of Elbert Patton and Lois Paddack Patton. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School. She married Robert Alan Cox on Jan. 6, 1952. He passed away Jan. 12, 2013.

Surviving family includes: two sons, Marshall Cox (Patty) of Newburgh and Carl Cox (Kathy) of Lafayette; daughter Melissa Barker (Don) of Ladoga; seven grandchildren, Josh, Evan, Nicole, Cristy, Connie, Brad and Stephanie; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Sarah, Joyce and Jeanette; as well as brother Jim.

Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Darlington Christian Church. Memorial services will begin at 3 p.m., led by Pastor Brian Holt. Inurnment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Darlington. Arrangements were entrusted to Burkhart Funeral Home.
