Neil Richard Remaklus, 75, of Attica passed away Sept. 13, 2026.
Born on March 14, 1951, Neil was the middle child of the late Mary (née Cool) and Dwayne Remaklus. Raised in a loving home alongside his older brother, Nick, and younger sister, Julia, Neil graduated from Anderson High School in May 1969.
Neil went on to attend Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. In the fall of his senior year, fate stepped in when he met Sally Pitzer in a ballroom dance class. The two quickly fell in love and were married shortly after Neil’s graduation on June 30, 1973. After living in Married Student Housing while Sally finished her degree, and a brief return to Indianapolis, Sally convinced Neil to move to her hometown of Attica, Indiana — the community they would call home for the next 50-plus years. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Abby, in the spring of 1978 and their son, Joseph, in the fall of 1980.
A devoted community servant and active father, Neil served for over twenty years on the Attica School Board and was a dedicated member of the local United Way Chapter. He was always involved in his children’s lives — coaching Joe’s youth baseball teams, timing Abby’s swim meets, and chaperoning far more school dances than he had bargained for. Professionally, Neil worked as a parole officer for the State of Indiana for more than two decades before embarking on a successful second career as a respected polygraph examiner until his retirement in 2021.
Neil was a proud grandfather to three grandsons: Maxwell, Samuel, and Abner. They all cherish fond memories of spending time on the farm with “Poppy/Grandpa Neil” and taking family vacations with him and “Momo/Grandma Sally.”
Neil was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; his father, Dwayne; and his beloved wife of 52 years, Sally.
He is survived by his daughter, Abby Kerkhove, and her husband, Joseph, along with their sons, Maxwell and Samuel; his son, Joseph Remaklus, and his wife, Kristen Rasnic Remaklus, along with their son, Abner; his brother and his wife, Nick & Janice Remaklus; and his sister and her husband, Julia Remaklus Smith and Jeff Smith.
Visitation hours are 5-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 and one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service, Saturday, Sept. 19 at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate ,with friends Roy Jones and Wally Hooker conducting the service. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Memorial contributions in Neil’s memory may be directed to the Attica Community Foundation.
