Dr. Scott Feller, the President of Wabash College, was the guest speaker at the Crawfordsville Rotary Club's noon meeting. Feller reported the enrollment at Wabash this year is 882 students. International students make up about 8% of the enrollment. He also reported around 53% of high school graduates go on to college. There are more than 2,000 places to obtain a bachelor's degree, but we only hear about 20 places in the media. Feller addressed the fact that the cost of one year at college could cost around $100,000. He encouraged students to work toward scholarships and other monies available through local business and clubs. Three main things students worry about are: student loan debt, borrowed money, and will a college degree be worth it?

Junior Moose Members Donate to Community Causes
Jay Strickland, Crawfordsville High School Principal, spoke to the Crawfordsville Rotary Club about his four years on the job. He graduated from Goshen College and has been in the education field for 24 years. Under his guidance, CHS has become a High Reliability School. Only 22 schools in Indiana earned this honor. Getting and keeping parents involved in school is a challenge due to.various factors. To keep in touch with the younger students, Strickland takes time to read to the kindergarteners.

Rob Johnson, retired Track and Field and Cross Country coach at Wabash College, spoke to the Crawfordsville Rotary Club at their noon meeting. Johnson told of his journey from the East Coast to the cornfields of Indiana and Wabash College. He began his career in 1971 at Wabash College, coaching football for one year. He then began coaching Track and Field and Cross Country. Johnson spent the fall of 2000 as one of the U.S. Track and Field coaches at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. “My experiences, and those of Wabash men who have participated in the Olympic trials, show that you can come to Wabash and be a part of the Olympic process. Dorothy Q Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of American Revolution gave a donation to the Crawfordsville Fire Department to sponsor 100 children of needed materials for the “Fire Safety Education Program.” In cooperation with the area schools, this program will assist CFD in teaching children fire safety and burn prevention. Mark Allen, left, who joined Scouts in 1960, spoke to the Crawfordsville Rotary Club at their noon meeting. The title of his talk was “Scouting America.” Boy Scouts of America was started Feb. 8, 1910. Scouts range from Cub Scouts to Eagle Scouts. They work on developing leadership, character and patriotism. These are activity based with many opportunities to earn badges and new skills. Camping is a major skill taught. Both male and female people may join. On Feb. 8, 2025 Scouting America will become the official name for the organization. Allen is pictured with Dr. Michael Scheidler.
Allen Speaks at Rotary
Dellie Craig, a local history specialist at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, spoke to the Crawfordsville Rotary Club at their noon meeting. Craig works with genealogy. There are three computers for genealogy patrons to use. A new scanner was donated to the library in 2020 to be used doing research. Craig is working with Dr. Michael Scheidler (also pictured) on a project called ”Tour of the Past: 105-109 East Main Street.” The building was owned by Wade Nixon. A video and a display will be set up on the library’s second floor at a later date. Local history books and newspapers can be found on the second floor. For help, contact Craig at 765-362-2242, ext. 118.
